News Topical, Digital Desk : The capital Delhi is once again grappling with a water shortage. Water supply has been affected in many parts of the city due to disruptions in water supply and technical issues related to canals. The Delhi Jal Board has confirmed the situation and appealed to residents to use water judiciously during this time. The biggest reason for the water crisis in Delhi is the change in water supply from Haryana. The Haryana Irrigation and Water Resources Department has installed a blind closure on the Parallel Selhi Branch. This has led to changes in the water supply system from January 20 to February 4, 2026.

During this time, the maximum amount of raw water is being diverted from the CLC to Wazirabad. The lack of adequate water from the DSB Canal has directly impacted Delhi's water treatment plants.

Decreased production at water treatment plants

According to Delhi Jal Board, water production has had to be reduced in Haiderpur Phase-1, Haiderpur Phase-2, Bawana, Dwarka and Nangloi water treatment plants.

A leak in the Munak Canal has disrupted the water supply to these plants. As a result, people in many areas are receiving water at low pressure or the supply has been disrupted altogether.

The Delhi Jal Board says the situation is being continuously monitored. Repairs are being carried out expeditiously, and efforts are being made to balance water supply through alternative diversions.

The board has clearly stated that until the situation returns to normal, citizens should use water only as needed.

Helpline number released

In case of water problems or in need of tankers, people can contact the central control room numbers 1916, 23527679, and 23634469. According to officials, the situation has become more challenging due to Haryana releasing less water into the Yamuna than expected, although efforts are ongoing to normalize the situation.

These areas are most affected

Water supply will be affected in Pitampura, Shalimar Bagh, Lawrence Road, Saraswati Vihar, Mongolpuri, Peeragarhi, Budh Vihar, Sultanpur, Raja Garden, Rajouri Garden, Hari Nagar, Kirti Nagar, parts of Mayapuri, Rohini Sector-23 and 29 and Kirari connected to Haiderpur Phase-1.

The Bawana plant will cause water shortages in Sultanpur Dabas, Qutubgarh, Karala, and Bawana. The Haiderpur Phase-2 plant is also likely to impact Rohini, Paschim Vihar, Janakpuri, Tilak Nagar, Delhi Cantt, Palam, Mahipalpur, Vasant Vihar, and Sadar Bazaar. The Dwarka plant may also cause water shortages in the entire Dwarka area and IGI Airport.
