
News Topical, Digital Desk : Water is being released from Hathinikund Barrage in Yamunanagar, Haryana for the last 80 hours, which is increasing the water of Yamuna in Delhi. On September 1, at 4 am, the gates of Hathinikund Barrage were opened after 1 lakh 65000 cusecs of water was received, which are still open continuously till now.
During this time, a maximum of 3 lakh 29000 cusecs of water was discharged and since then water is being discharged continuously in the form of mini floods. Meanwhile, the concrete blocks built on the Uttar Pradesh side of the barrage which were installed for protection have been washed away due to the onslaught of water. However, the officials are not considering this as a threat to the barrage. Many cracks are visible in the wall on that side of the water.
Superintendent Engineer of the Irrigation Department R S Mittal says that as soon as the water level reduces, the repair work will be started. He said that there is no danger to the barrage.
Land erosion in 12 villages
Due to the continuous discharge of water from Hathinikund Barrage, land erosion has occurred in more than a dozen villages of Yamunanagar district. Hundreds of acres of land have been submerged in Yamuna. These villages include Kamalpur Tapu, Pobari, Lakad, Banjara Boss, Unhedi, Bibipur, Kaleshwar etc.
How are things now?
All these villages are situated right on the banks of Yamuna. The Superintendent Engineer admitted that Yamuna had come close to the population in Pobri and island Kamalpur, where protection work was started by the department, currently the situation is under control.
3 lakh 59000 cusecs of water was released in 2023
The superintendent engineer said that in 2023, the maximum flow of water in Yamuna was 3 lakh 59000 cusecs which continued for about 97 hours. This season also it has been 80 hours and water is being discharged continuously. There is a mini flood right now.
He said that when more than one lakh cusecs of water comes, it is considered a low flood, and when more than one and a half lakh cusecs of water comes, it is called a medium flood. Whereas when two and a half lakh cusecs of water comes, it is considered a high flood. High flood continued from the barrage for 18 hours, while water is being discharged as medium flood for 80 hours.
Orders for 24 hour duty for employees
R S Mittal said that after the order of Irrigation Minister Shruti Chaudhary, all the employees and officers of the department have been ordered to remain on duty for 24 hours. During this time, no officer or employee can leave his station.
He appealed to people not to go near Yamuna in view of the rising water level in Yamuna. He said that two days ago two children had drowned in Belgadh in a similar way. He also appealed to parents to take care of their children and not let them go near Yamuna.
