News Topical, Digital Desk : Opposition alliance's candidate for the Vice Presidential election, B. Sudarshan Reddy, has launched a scathing attack on his rival and ruling NDA candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan. Addressing a press conference on Monday, he alleged that Radhakrishnan was neither visible nor speaking. He said that if he had spoken, a healthy debate would have been possible.
"My opponents are not visible"
Former judge Sudarshan Reddy said, "My opponent is not visible. He does not speak. I don't know where he is, what he is doing. If both the candidates speak, there will be debate, there will be conversation. There will be an opportunity to introduce myself to the people. Not just the voters. I did not get that opportunity."
When asked to explain the comment in detail, Sudarshan Reddy said he made the comment from the point of view that if Radhakrishnan had also spoken, there would have been a healthy conversation. Asked what is the biggest constitutional challenge facing India in the current circumstances, Reddy said the most serious challenge before the Constitution is the "flaws" in the functioning of the great constitutional institution - the Election Commission of India. "If this continues, democracy in this country will be in danger. This is what I believe," he said.
"Now I am the candidate of the opposition parties"
Clarifying Chief Minister Reddy's remarks that he was the candidate of the 'India' alliance, Sudarshan Reddy said he was now the "candidate of the opposition parties". He said he had the support of even those parties like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which were not part of the 'India' alliance. Former Supreme Court judge Sudarshan Reddy said contesting the Vice President's election was part of his 53-year long journey with the Constitution. He said the Vice Presidential election would be one of the most fair and civilised elections ever fought in the recent history of India.
He said, "Our country is not majoritarian. Our society is multilingual, multicultural and multi-religious. The Constitution does not give power to anyone. The job of the Constitution is to limit your power." On accepting the proposal to contest for the post of Vice President, he said that at a time when the Constitution and democratic systems in the country are losing their shine, it is not only his duty but the duty of every citizen to raise their voice.
