News Topical, Digital Desk : PM Modi on Friday launched a year-long commemoration to mark the 150th anniversary of the national song 'Vande Mataram'. Modi also released a commemorative postage stamp and coin at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on the occasion. The event marks the formal start of a year-long nationwide commemoration from November 7, 2025, to November 7, 2026. The commemoration will celebrate 150 years of the timeless song that inspired India's freedom movement and played a key role in maintaining national pride and unity.
On this occasion, PM Modi said, "Vande Mataram, these words are a mantra, an energy, a dream, a resolution. Vande Mataram, these words are the devotion of Mother India, the worship of Mother India. Vande Mataram, these words take us into history, it fills our present with new confidence, and gives new courage to our future that there is no resolution which cannot be accomplished, there is no goal which we Indians cannot achieve."
PM Modi said, "The mass singing of Vande Mataram is an indescribable experience. In so many voices - one rhythm, one tone, one emotion, one thrill and flow - such energy, such a wave has shaken the heart. This wonderful experience of this mass singing of Vande Mataram is truly beyond expression. 7th November 2025 is a very historic day. Today we are celebrating the 150th year of 'Vande Mataram'. This auspicious occasion will give us new inspiration and will fill crores of countrymen with new energy. To mark this day in history, a special coin and postage stamp on 'Vande Mataram' have also been issued today."
PM Modi further said, "Today, I pay my respectful homage to the millions of great men of the country, the children of Mother India, for sacrificing their lives for 'Vande Mataram' and extend my heartfelt congratulations to the countrymen. In that period of slavery, 'Vande Mataram' became the proclamation of the resolve that the chains of slavery would be broken by the hands of Mother India, of India's independence! Her children would become the makers of their own destiny!"
PM Modi further said, "Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore once said that Bankim Chandra's 'Anandamath' is not just a novel, it is a dream of independent India. The context of 'Vande Mataram' in 'Anandamath', its every line, every word and every emotion of Bankim Babu, all had their own deep implications, and still have. This song was composed during the period of slavery, but its words were never imprisoned in the shadow of slavery. They always remained free from the memories of slavery. That is why 'Vande Mataram' is relevant in every era, in every period. It has achieved immortality."
PM Modi said, "In 1875, when Bankim Babu published 'Vande Mataram' in 'Banga Darshan', some people thought it was just a song. But in no time, 'Vande Mataram' became the voice of India's freedom struggle. A voice that was on the lips of every revolutionary, a voice that expressed the feelings of every Indian! Vande Mataram, besides being the song of freedom fighters, also inspires us on how to protect this freedom. Vande Mataram is relevant in every era and every period. It has attained immortality."
The PM said, "We have repeatedly understood the balance between power and morality, and only then has India emerged as that refined gold - a nation that has borne every wound of the past, yet achieved immortality through its perseverance. This idea of India is the intellectual power behind it." He said, "The first line of Vande Mataram is: “Sujalam Suphalam Malayajsheetalam Shasyashyamalam Mataram.” Meaning - Salutations to our motherland, which is adorned with the divine blessings of nature."
