News Topical, Digital Desk : In the Chinyalisaur area of Uttarkashi district, the ongoing erosion from Tehri Lake has once again raised concerns. A protective wall, built four years ago to protect the main market and costing approximately five crore rupees, has now buckled, posing a threat to the Gangotri Highway and surrounding residential areas.
According to locals, the rising and falling water level of Tehri Lake has long caused soil erosion. Anticipating this threat, THDC constructed a 30-meter-high retaining wall from the lake to the Gangotri Highway near the main market. The aim was to prevent erosion from the lake and protect the market and road.
Serious damage if immediate action is not taken
But now, the wall has tilted approximately three meters toward the Gangotri Highway. The impact of the wall's tilt is directly visible on the road. Cracks have appeared at various points on the highway, and the Jogat-Devisaur motorway has also been affected. Even roadside power poles are seen swinging toward the tilted wall, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Former municipal president Shourveer Rangad stated that this situation arose due to poor quality of construction work and lack of oversight. He said that local residents have been complaining constantly, but no concrete corrective measures have been taken so far. If timely action is not taken, the main market, residential buildings, and the important Gangotri Highway could suffer serious damage.
Panic grips local traders and residents
The Chinyalisaur market area is already considered sensitive. The possibility of a landslide has created panic among local traders and residents. People have demanded that the administration and relevant agencies conduct an immediate technical investigation and implement effective safety measures.
If immediate repairs and permanent solutions are not found, this problem may turn into a major crisis in the future.
