News Topical, Digital Desk : Electricity bill arrears against government departments in Uttarakhand have reached more than ₹104 crore. Taking a tough stance, Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has made the list of defaulters public on its official website. The corporation has decided to post an updated list of outstanding amounts on its website every month to maintain transparency.
According to data as of March 2, government institutions and some private industrial units across the state have outstanding electricity bills totaling ₹104.57 crore. The Water Board and Irrigation Departments have the highest outstanding dues. In Almora district, the Water Board has a single outstanding account of ₹10.34 crore, which is among the highest outstanding accounts. In Tehri district, the Drinking Water Corporation has outstanding electricity bills of over ₹4.52 crore.
Serious situation in Haridwar and Dehradun too
In Haridwar district, a project manager in the Jwalapur division owes Rs 4.49 crore on the Ganga project, and another project manager owes Rs 2.16 crore. A private industrial unit in Roorkee has a massive debt of Rs 3.75 crore. In Dehradun, a Jalkal engineer has a single outstanding account of over Rs 1.63 crore. The Ganga Pollution Control Project also has an outstanding amount of over Rs 1 crore.
Defaulters from Medical College to Tubewell Section
In the medical education sector, Soban Singh Jeena Medical College has outstanding bills of ₹14.64 lakh. The Tubewell Division in Nainital district has outstanding bills of ₹44.78 lakh, the EE Tubewell Division in Champawat has outstanding bills of lakhs on several accounts, and the Water Institute in Barkot has outstanding bills of ₹25.90 lakh.
If payment is not made on time, electricity will be cut off.
UPCL management has issued a clear warning that if the concerned departments do not make timely payments, power supply could be affected in the coming months. The corporation states that the ever-increasing outstanding dues are increasing financial pressure, which could impact power supply and maintenance work. The corporation's next review report will be released in the first week of April 2026.
