News Topical, Digital Desk : China's most senior general, Zhang Youxia, has been accused of providing information about Chinese nuclear weapons to the United States. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the senior general provided confidential information to the US in exchange for money and promotion.

The allegations against the senior general were made during a closed-door briefing attended by senior military officials on Saturday, January 24. China's Defense Ministry announced an investigation against Zhang shortly thereafter.

Information about nuclear weapons leaked from China

China's Defense Ministry said, "Zhang Youxia is suspected of serious violations of party discipline and state law." The ministry did not provide any details.

Zhang was accused of forming a political group and abusing his authority in the Central Military Commission, the Communist Party's top military body, people familiar with the briefing told the Wall Street Journal.

Authorities also investigated his control over a powerful military procurement agency, where he was accused of accepting large sums of money in exchange for promotions.

According to the journal, the most serious allegation was that Zhang had leaked key technical data related to China's nuclear weapons program to the United States.
