News Topical, Digital Desk : A meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump is expected soon. The US has also made it clear that it has no intention of mediating on the Kashmir issue, dealing a severe blow to Pakistan.

On Thursday, news agency ANI quoted a US official as saying that the meeting is considered certain given the positive relationship between the two leaders. However, no official information has been released regarding the time and location of the meeting.

"I'm sure you'll see them meet. They have a very positive relationship," the US official said.

"I'm sure you'll see the two (Modi and Trump) meet. They have a very positive relationship. We have a Quad summit and we're working on planning it. It will happen sometime, if not this year then next year. We're working on dates. So there's a lot going on in the US-India relationship, and I think we'll see continued positive momentum," the official said.

What statement was given on Kashmir issue

The US has no intention of bringing India and Pakistan together, a US State Department official said, adding that the Trump administration does not intend to mediate on the Kashmir issue.

"Our long-standing policy has been that this is a direct matter between India and Pakistan, and the president, as he does on every issue, is ready to assist us if asked. But he already has many crises on his hands. This is a matter between India and Pakistan that needs to be resolved," the official said.

A cocktail of friendship and tension

Trump recently called PM Modi on his 75th birthday and congratulated him and praised him saying that he is doing a great job.

Despite some tensions between India and the US over trade and visa policies, Trump described Modi as a good friend and the relationship with New Delhi as very special. In his congratulatory message, Trump also praised India's support for ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

During a recent meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the two countries agreed to enhance cooperation in priority areas. Earlier in February, Modi and Trump held bilateral talks on trade, energy, and defense cooperation.

How will the meeting be amid the tension in trade?

India-US relations have faced some challenges in recent months. The Trump administration has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian imports, including a 25% tariff on Russian oil. Furthermore, a new fee of $100,000 for H-1B visas could pose difficulties for Indian IT professionals and startups.

Despite these tensions, the two countries are moving forward with trade talks as the deadline approaches. A potential meeting between the two leaders is seen as a positive step in this direction, potentially strengthening cooperation.
