News Topical, Digital Desk : Dismissed Uttar Pradesh IPS Mani Lal Patidar, who is in jail on charges of extortion, abetment to suicide and corruption and is awaiting bail, did not get any relief from the Supreme Court as on Wednesday the Uttar Pradesh government sought time to file a reply to the bail plea and the hearing was postponed.

Giving time to the state government, the Supreme Court has postponed the hearing of the case till July 17. 2014 batch IPS officer Manilal Patidar was booked in 2020 for extortion, abetment to suicide, and corruption.

Patidar had surrendered in 2022

After being absconding for a long time, Patidar surrendered on 15 October 2022 and has been in jail since then. Meanwhile, on September 2, 2022, he was dismissed from his job on the orders of the Government of India. After the bail was rejected by the High Court, Patidar has filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court seeking bail.

Patidar's lawyer sought bail

On Wednesday, senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Patidar, requested bail from the bench of Justice SVN Bhatti and Prasanna B. Varale, saying that the petitioner has been in jail since October 2022 and the charges have not been framed in the case yet, so he should be granted bail. But the court questioned that being a senior police officer, he should have cooperated in the case, how could he remain absconding for a long time.

The next hearing in the case will be on July 17

After this, the court questioned the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) appearing on behalf of Uttar Pradesh as to why the charges have not been framed in the case yet. The ASG asked for some time to file a reply to the petition. He also said that considering the seriousness of the allegations, the accused should not be granted bail. The court gave time to the state government for the reply and postponed the hearing till July 17.

Patidar was accused of extortion

In this case, in 2020, when Manilal Patidar was the SP of Mahoba, businessman Indrakant Tripathi had accused Manilal Patidar and other police personnel of extorting money. A complaint was sent to the state government and the allegations were also posted on Facebook.

However, the police denied the allegations and accused Indrakant of being involved in a gambling case. But the very next day Indrakant died of a gunshot wound. After his death, an FIR was filed against Manilal Patidar and other policemen.
