News Topical, Digital Desk : The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) on Thursday achieved a major success by arresting Sumit Kumar, a criminal carrying a reward of ₹2 lakh who had escaped from Badaun jail seven years earlier. Sumit was wanted in murder and jailbreak cases in both Moradabad and Badaun districts.
STF officials said the arrested accused, Sumit Kumar, is a resident of Navaini Gaddi, Hazratnagar Garhi police station (Moradabad district). He was apprehended by police during a cordon and search operation on the Bareilly-Pilibhit road, under the Moradabad-Lucknow highway. He was trying to flee to Nepal at the time.
Murder accused had escaped from jail
In fact, Sumit murdered Yogendra, alias Bhura, a notorious criminal and then-block chief, in the Moradabad court complex in 2015. Bhura was accused of orchestrating the murder of Sumit's elder brother, Rinku, in 2014. Following this murder, Sumit was sent to jail, from where he escaped.
But on May 12, 2018, he made a film-like escape from Badaun jail. It's said that a prisoner named Chandan, a resident of Gorakhpur, had orchestrated his escape. Sumit escaped by scaling the wall with a rope, while Chandan failed. Since then, Sumit has eluded police custody, hiding in places like Delhi, Meerut, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Odisha, and Nepal.
The accused had gone to Nepal and started living there
According to sources, Sumit, tired of being on the run for so long, was planning to move to Nepal permanently. He got off a truck near Bareilly and was waiting for a vehicle headed for Tanakpur. Acting on a tip from an informant, the Special Task Force (STF) arrested him.
The team behind this STF success was the Bareilly Field Unit, led by Sub-Inspector Dhoom Singh. The team included Sub-Inspector Amit Kumar, Constables Hariom Singh and Kuldeep Kumar, and driver Manoj Awasthi.
Police initiated action
After the arrest, Sumit was lodged in the Civil Lines police station of Badaun and further legal action has been initiated. It is noteworthy that the UP Police has launched a major campaign against absconding and wanted criminals across the state.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has repeatedly stated that criminals will either go to jail or leave the state. In accordance with this policy, the Special Task Force (STF) is continuously carrying out major operations.
