News Topical, Digital Desk : Gautam Buddha Park located in Kanshiram Nagar Colony in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh has become a political headline in the state, the reason being BSP supremo Mayawati's opposition to construction in the park. All India Ambedkar Yuvak Sangh has started an indefinite dharna against the alleged illegal construction by the Municipal Corporation.
The protesters allege that Mayor Vinod Agarwal and some municipal corporation officials have destroyed the green area of the park to build a senior citizen care centre and other construction works, which is a violation of Supreme Court orders. The issue has now taken a political turn, with BSP supremo Mayawati also demanding immediate intervention from the Yogi government.
Controversy over illegal construction in Gautam Buddha Park
Gautam Buddha Park located in Kanshiram Nagar is a major and popular park in the city, which is the center of faith for the followers of Buddhism, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, Kanshiram and Bahujan Samaj.
The protesters say that the Municipal Corporation has already destroyed the greenery by building a waste management education centre on about 10 bighas of the 28 bigha green area of the park. Now the construction of a senior citizen care centre has been started in the remaining area, which includes works like cutting trees and installing kiosks and charging stations on the boundary of the park.
The protesters raised the question that who will operate the charging station? Municipal Corporation or any private person? They alleged that the Mayor installed the statue of his wife in Company Bagh, but why was Gautam Buddha Park chosen for the Senior Citizen Care Center?
Violation of Supreme Court orders
Mahavir Prasad Maurya, national president of All India Ambedkar Yuvak Sangh, said that the Supreme Court has given a clear order that temples, mosques, churches or other construction work cannot be done in public parks. Despite this, the Municipal Corporation has tried to change the original form of Gautam Buddha Park. He warned that if the construction work is not stopped, the movement will be intensified.
Reaction of BSP supremo Mayawati
BSP supremo Mayawati took a tough stand on the issue and posted on social media platform X, "Moradabad's Gautam Buddha Park is the center of faith of Buddhism and Bahujan Samaj. The construction of Senior Care Center by the Municipal Corporation is causing anger and unrest in the society. The Yogi government should immediately stop the construction work so that peace and brotherhood can be maintained. She also demanded that the government should present the correct facts in the court to restore 70% reservation for Scheduled Castes and Tribes in four medical colleges."
The municipal side
The Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation claimed that the Senior Care Center is being constructed under the Chief Minister Global City Scheme of the Uttar Pradesh government. The total area of the park is 16,000 square meters, of which only 7% is being constructed, which is according to the guidelines. He said that the center will be named after Gautam Buddha and a proposal has also been made to hand over its operation to the agitating organizations.
Importance of Gautam Buddha Park
Let us tell you that during the BSP regime, Moradabad Development Authority (MDA) developed Gautam Buddha Park on 28 bighas of land under the Kanshiram Nagar scheme. However, previous construction work has already reduced the green area of the park.
