News Topical, Digital Desk : Ukraine targeted the Russian capital Moscow in a drone strike last night. The attack affected flights at major airports in the Moscow region, forcing more than 200 flights to be cancelled or delayed.

Explosions were heard in Moscow

Russia said anti-aircraft units shot down three dozen Ukrainian drones heading towards the capital. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said two Ukrainian civilians were killed in Russian missile, drone and bomb attacks overnight.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on the messaging app Telegram, "36 drones that were heading towards the city since last evening were shot down. There were no casualties." Several explosions were heard near the offices of the news agency PTI in southwest Moscow around 7 pm local time on Monday.

More than 200 flights affected at Moscow airports

Meanwhile, according to Russia's state news agency TASS, more than 200 flights at Moscow airports were affected by drone attacks. Four cars were destroyed in a drone attack on a parking lot in the suburb of Reutov, where BrahMos Aerospace's Russian joint venture partner, NPOMASH, is headquartered. Ukraine also claimed to have targeted two Russian oil distribution centers in the Bryansk and Samara regions of Russia in drone attacks, according to Reuters.

Zelensky appeals for strong pressure on Russia

Ukrainian President Zelensky urged leaders attending the United Nations (UN) General Assembly session to exert real and powerful pressure on Russia to end the more than three-year war, according to the New York Times. He made the appeal in an internet media post on Monday.

Zelensky is currently in New York to attend a UN session. According to Reuters, Zelensky said before meeting Trump on Tuesday that he would brief the US president on the current situation and discuss security guarantees.
