News Topical, Digital Desk : Peace talks in Gaza, underway at an Egyptian resort, have reached a crucial juncture. Top US Middle East advisers, Qatar's prime minister, and several other senior officials attended the third day of the talks on Wednesday.

This indicates that negotiators are now delving into the most difficult issues of the US peace plan to end the ongoing war in Gaza. Hamas has said it needs assurances from mediating countries that Israel will not resume military operations after all hostages are released.

Thousands of Palestinians died

Both sides have so far expressed hope that a way will soon be found to end the nearly two-year war that has killed thousands of Palestinians and devastated much of the Gaza Strip.

At present, agreement has not yet been reached on some key elements of the agreement. The most significant issues include:

  • Hamas disarming (death penalty)
  • Timing and scope of Israeli troop withdrawal
  • Establishment of an international body to govern Gaza after Hamas

Trump will visit the Middle East

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he may travel to the Middle East in the coming days. "I might be going there later this week. The talks are going very well," Trump said during an event at the White House.
