News Topical, Digital Desk : Trump has once again given a statement regarding the 50 percent tariff imposed on India. He termed the US tariff imposed on India as justified. Talking to the media, Trump said that the trade relations between India and America have been completely one-sided for many decades. At the same time, once again on Tuesday (local time), Trump strongly defended his stance and said that there is a "very good" relationship between New Delhi and Washington.
There was a one-sided relationship with India for many years: Trump
US President Trump claimed that New Delhi is imposing the world's highest tariffs on America, creating an unbalanced trade scenario. He further said that our relations with India are very good. But there was a one-sided relationship with India for many years.
He said that India was charging us huge duties. These duties were the highest in the world but they were doing business with us because we were not charging them silly duties, so they sent whatever they made to the country but we were not sending anything because they were levying 100 percent duty on us.
Trump gave the example of Harley Davidson
Citing the example of American motorcycle company Harley Davidson, he highlighted the challenges faced by the company due to the 200 per cent tariff on motorcycles imported into India. He said Harley Davidson could not sell its motorcycles in India because there was a 200 per cent tariff on motorcycles... Harley Davidson went to India and built a motorcycle plant there and could not sell because of the tariff.
India has imposed high tariffs
Trump also said that thousands of companies, especially carmakers from China, Mexico and Canada, are choosing to make their products in the US to avoid tariffs and take advantage of protective policies. He said that India has imposed such high tariffs on the US, the highest of any country, that our businesses are unable to sell goods in India.
