News Topical, Digital Desk : Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been arrested. He has been arrested in connection with the alleged misuse of government funds. The Ft Magistrate Court of Colombo has ordered him to be sent to judicial custody till August 26. Indian politicians have also reacted to the arrest of Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed concern over the arrest of the former President. He has urged the current government of Sri Lanka not to act in the spirit of revenge politics. Shashi Tharoor posted on his X handle and wrote, the allegations leveled against Ranil Wickremesinghe seem to be minor. He has been immediately admitted to the hospital after his arrest. His health is a matter of concern.

He further said, I respect that this is an internal matter of Sri Lanka. I just want to urge the Sri Lankan government to abandon the politics of revenge and treat the former President with respect and dignity.

Can be sentenced to 20 years

The case against Wickremesinghe relates to the alleged misuse of around 1.66 crore Sri Lankan rupees which was spent during his tenure as President.

In this regard, the CID has charged Wickremesinghe under Sections 386 and 388 of the Sri Lankan Penal Code as well as Section 5(1) of the Public Property Act. If the charges against the former president are proved true, he could be sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison.
