News Topical, Digital Desk : Western countries, especially the US and the European Union, are constantly advising India on buying oil from Russia and are also threatening to impose economic penalties, but the reality is that these countries are still constantly buying a lot of things they need from Russia.
The latest figures show that gas supply to European countries through Russian pipelines has increased by 37 percent in July 2025. The claim of European countries that they have purchased less energy products from Russia is completely wrong. Because the decrease seen in the figures is because the energy importers of European countries are facing difficulty in making payments to Russia.
India is not taking the threat seriously
The Indian government has all the above mentioned data regarding the purchase and sale of energy in the international market. This is the reason why the Ministry of External Affairs is not taking the threat of imposing new restrictions on energy purchases from Russia by the European Union very seriously. Energy sector experts believe that such a ban will further destabilize the global energy market and the western countries will have to bear the brunt of it.
It is India's official policy that it will buy cheap crude or gas from wherever it can meet the needs of its people. In this regard, India is trying to buy more gas from America as well, but the demand for gas and crude in India is increasing at the fastest rate in the world. India cannot accept America's demand that it should not buy anything from Russia.
The European Union is also buying from Russia
Diplomatic sources recently cited a report by CREA (Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air) that said, "Since Russia attacked Ukraine, the EU has paid Russia a total of $105.6 billion for energy purchases, which is 76 percent of Russia's total military budget. Russian LNG is still being used in every EU country."
According to this, '87 percent of Russia's LNG has gone to Spain, Belgium and France but this does not mean that the entire LNG was used only in these three countries. France's LNG imports have increased by 47 percent while the Netherlands has increased its import of Russian LNG by 81 percent. If we talk about the year 2025, two European countries have paid $ 8.5 billion to Russia in exchange for LNG.'
India replied to Trump
This shows that European countries have failed to find an alternative to energy products imported from Russia. In fact, European countries do not have an alternative to Russian LNG anywhere in the world. Two days ago, the Indian government has termed the US President's statements on the purchase of oil and gas from Russia as unfair and inconsistent. Indian officials say that President Trump is not aware of the real situation.
Then on Tuesday, when asked if the US was still buying uranium for its nuclear programme and metals needed for electric vehicles, he replied that he was not aware of it. The Indian foreign ministry in its response reminded the US that it was buying uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for the EV industry as well as fertilisers.
