News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump on Friday raised the H-1B visa fee to $100,000. This move, ostensibly to prioritize the American workforce, could have a profound impact on Indian professionals and tech companies.
Meanwhile, Tesla and SpaceX owner Elon Musk's old statement and subsequent change of stance regarding the H-1B visa is going viral on social media. Musk, himself from South Africa and able to live in the US due to the visa system, was previously considered a strong supporter of the H-1B visa.
Musk's exchanged statement
He said that many key people working at his companies, Tesla and SpaceX, came using this visa. On December 28, he wrote on X, "I am in America, and many of the key people who built my companies, are here only because of the H-1B. If it is stopped, I will wage war on this issue."
However, within hours, he said the H-1B system was broken and needed major changes. Musk suggested raising the minimum salary for visa holders and making it more expensive for companies to maintain them, so that domestic workers would be prioritized.
Trump's Gold Card Program
The Trump administration has also announced a new Gold Card visa program. It will include categories such as the "Trump Gold Card," the "Trump Platinum Card," and the "Trump Corporate Gold Card." These cards will replace existing employment-based visas for individuals such as professors, scientists, artists, and athletes.
