News Topical, Digital Desk : Thailand is preparing to send back to the US a large consignment of illegally imported electronic waste seized by authorities at the Laem Chabang port.

The consignment, weighing around 284 tonnes, was seized after inspection by Department of Special Investigation (DSI) customs officials and Pollution Control Department officials.

Containers will be sent back to America

Deputy Prime Minister Suchart Chomklin confirmed that 12 shipping containers carrying about 285,000 kilograms of e-waste were seized during the operation and will be sent back to the US.

E-waste smugglers misidentify it as scrap metal

Customs Department Director-General Phanthong Loysakunanon said the incident came to light after a thorough investigation by the DSI, which uncovered the smuggling methods. Smugglers attempted to deceive customs officials by passing off hazardous electronic waste as scrap metal from Haiti.

Gemini said Thai authorities are now monitoring 714 additional containers currently on their way to ensure 100 percent compliance with international protocols.
