News Topical, Digital Desk : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday participated in the Pongal celebrations in the national capital, calling it a global festival representing one of the world's ancient civilisations.
Modi's presence at the event organised at the residence of Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan is being seen as an attempt to reach out to voters in the southern state, where assembly elections are due in the next few months.
Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, Union Ministers G Kishan Reddy and Ram Mohan Naidu, several bureaucrats and prominent figures from the Tamil community attended the event.
Addressing the event, Modi said Tamil culture is one of the oldest civilisations in the world and contains centuries of wisdom and tradition, which draws lessons from history and shows the way to the future.
Drawing inspiration from this heritage, today's India draws strength from its cultural roots as it moves forward. On this auspicious occasion of Pongal, we realize that the spirit of faith and unity that drives India forward is deeply rooted in its culture and profound respect for this land. The festival of Pongal emphasizes the importance of maintaining a harmonious balance between nature, family, and society.
The PM said that this festival celebrates the hard work of farmers and expresses gratitude to the Earth and the Sun. The festival of Pongal reminds us that gratitude should not be limited to words but should become an essential part of our everyday lives.
When the earth gives us so much, it is our responsibility to cherish and protect it. Tamil communities and those who cherish Tamil culture around the world celebrate Pongal with great enthusiasm, and I am honored to be among them.
"Maintaining soil health, conserving water, and using resources wisely for future generations is essential. Initiatives like Mission Life, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and Amrit Sarovar are based on this spirit and encourage us to uphold these values," he said.
