News Topical, Digital Desk : The Supreme Court is going to resume hearing on Monday on a PIL seeking a thorough investigation into the alleged illegal wildlife transfer and illegal captivity of elephants at the Vantara Wildlife Center in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

A bench of Justices Pankaj Mittal and Prasanna B. Varale had on August 25 ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the wide-ranging allegations, casting doubts not just against Vanatara, but also statutory authorities and even the courts.

These people are included in SIT

Apart from retired Supreme Court Justice Jasti Chelameswar, the SIT includes former Chief Justice of Uttarakhand and Telangana High Court Justice Raghavendra Chauhan, former Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale and senior IRS officer Anish Gupta.

What did the bench say?

The bench clarified that the process is "merely a fact-finding inquiry to assist the court" and “shall not be construed as casting doubt on the actions of any statutory authorities or the private respondent-Vantara.”

The SIT was asked to submit its report by September 12 and the Supreme Court said that the two PILs will be listed on September 15 for consideration of the SIT's findings. In its order passed on September 12, a bench headed by Justice Mittal noted that the SIT has submitted its report in a sealed cover which also contains a pen drive.
