News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump, while talking to coalition leaders on phone on Thursday, said that Europe should stop buying Russian oil as it is helping Moscow to raise funds for the war against Ukraine.

A White House official said, "The President also stressed that European leaders should put economic pressure on China for funding the war against Russia." This new move by Donald Trump comes at a time when Washington has imposed heavy tariffs on India's purchase of oil from Russia.

'War is being funded'

French President Emmanuel Macron hosted a summit in Paris attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Other leaders, such as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, participated remotely.

"President Macron and European leaders also invited President Trump to the 'Willing Coalition' meeting. President Trump stressed that Europe should stop buying Russian oil, which is funding the war - as Russia received 1.1 billion euros a year from fuel sales to the EU," the official was quoted as saying.

'Europe should also play an active role'

President Trump questioned how his seriousness could be trusted as long as he continues to support Russia's economy and the war. "The president has made it clear this is not his war and that Europe should play an active role in it," the official said.

The European Commission has proposed a law to phase out the EU's oil and gas imports from Russia by January 1, 2028.
