News Topical, Digital Desk : A Kerala court on Friday sentenced six people to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting an actress in 2017. The sentence came just days after top Malayalam cinema actor Dileep was acquitted in the same case.
The prosecution said this was the lowest sentence awarded for the crime and would appeal. Ernakulam District and Principal Sessions Court Judge Honey M Varghese sentenced Sunil NS alias Pulsar Suni, Martin Antony, Manikandan B, Vijayesh VP, Salim H and Pradeep to 20 years rigorous imprisonment for the crime of gang rape.
Various fines imposed
He was slapped with various charges, including criminal conspiracy, assault or use of criminal force with intent to wrongfully confine a person, and kidnapping. Suni was also sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh for the offences, including publishing or transmitting sexually explicit material.
Martin was sentenced to three years' rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹25,000. The court ordered that all sentences run concurrently, and the time spent in custody before being granted bail would be deducted from the total sentence. The court ordered compensation of ₹500,000 to the victim. It also ordered that the pen drive containing the video of the sexual assault be kept in the custody of the investigating officer.
