News Topical, Digital Desk : Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said on Monday (February 2) that the Shiv Sena has decided to nominate women for the mayoral posts in Thane, Kalyan-Dombivali, and Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporations. However, the mayoral posts in these municipal corporations are not reserved for women. This decision reflects the party's emphasis on women's leadership.
Eknath Shinde said in a release from his office that Sharmila Pimpolkar-Gaikwad will be nominated as mayor in the Thane Municipal Corporation, Harshali Thavil Chaudhary in the Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation, and Ashwini Nikam in the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation. This is the first time in the history of these municipal corporations that women will hold the mayoral position without the benefit of reservation.
Shiv Sena's decision to promote women empowerment
"This decision by the Shiv Sena has been taken consciously to promote women's empowerment beyond mandatory quotas," it said. It added that women should receive opportunities based on their capabilities and leadership, without waiting for reservations. The release said that despite there being no reservation for women for the mayoral post, the Shiv Sena has shown confidence in its beloved sisters and entrusted them with the leadership of important municipal bodies.
Shinde approved the proposal to give priority to women leaders.
It further stated that there was speculation that a man would be chosen as mayor in the absence of any reservations for these positions. The release stated that after Kalyan Shiv Sena MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde strongly advocated for considering capable women councillors for the top civic body post, Shinde approved the proposal to give preference to women leaders.
Elections to 29 municipal corporations were held on January 15.
The release also stated that 19 of the Shiv Sena's 29 councillors in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation are women. It added that 63 of the 90 candidates contesting the BMC elections were women. Elections for 29 municipal corporations, including the BMC, were held on January 15, with the results declared a day later on January 16.
