Union Home Minister Amit Shah is going to introduce a proposal in the Rajya Sabha on Friday. Amit Shah will seek parliamentary approval to extend the period of President's rule in Manipur by six months. After the proposal is passed, it will be effective from August 13, 2025. What was said in the notice?
The notice issued by the Rajya Sabha said that Home Minister and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has given notice of the following resolution which has been accepted:-
“This House approves the continuation in operation of the Proclamation issued by the President under article 356 of the Constitution of India, with respect to Manipur, on the 13th day of February, 2025, for a further period of six months from the 13th day of August, 2025.”
How many deaths so far in Manipur?
The situation in Manipur has not yet fully improved. More than 260 people have died so far in the ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki groups that started in the state in May 2023. At the same time, thousands of people have become homeless during this period. After the resignation of the state Chief Minister N Biren Singh, the central government imposed President's rule in Manipur on 13 February 2025. The term of the state assembly was till 2027. However, it has been suspended for the time being.
