New Delhi: Maharashtra Assembly Election  The Election Commission is going to announce the assembly elections today. The Commission (ECI) will announce the schedule of assembly elections today at around 3 pm. Maharashtra elections (Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha Election 2024 Date) can also be announced today. However, the Election Commission has not mentioned the names of the states.

Elections are to be held in 4 states

This year, elections are to be held in Haryana, Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Maharashtra. Today the Election Commission will announce the dates for filing nominations, voting and declaration of results. On August 14, the Election Commission held a meeting with Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

In December last year, the Supreme Court had directed the Central government to complete the election process in the Union Territory by September 30, 2024.

Speculations about elections intensify in Maharashtra

The Election Commission may announce the schedule of assembly elections for the 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Currently, the ruling Mahayuti has 218 seats and the opposition Mahavikas Aghadi has 78 seats in Maharashtra.

Possibility of election announcement in only two states

However, the Election Commission visits the states before announcing the dates. Recently, the Election Commission visited Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. Therefore, there is a possibility that the announcement may be made in these two states and the schedule for the assembly elections for Maharashtra Assembly may be announced later.

Jammu and Kashmir is going to polls after a gap of ten years as the last assembly elections were held in 2014. The PDP-BJP coalition government fell in June 2018 after the PDP withdrew support to then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.

Announcement can also be made in Haryana

The term of the current government in Haryana will end on November 3, 2024 and elections are due in 90 assembly constituencies in the state. After the 2019 elections, the BJP, which had 40 seats in the 90-member assembly, formed a coalition government with the JJP. The JJP had won 10 seats, while the Congress had won 31 seats. The BJP-JJP alliance broke earlier this year. Haryana is likely to witness a four-cornered contest between the BJP, Congress, JJP and AAP in 2024.
