News Topical, Digital Desk : US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has made a significant claim regarding the trade deal between India and the United States. The minister stated that the deal was not finalized because Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not call US President Donald Trump.
America makes a big claim on trade deal with India
"To be clear, this was the American president's deal. He makes the final decisions. He does everything. Everything was pre-planned; all PM Modi had to do was call the president. He felt uncomfortable doing that. PM Modi didn't call, so the deal didn't happen," Howard Lutnick said in an interview with American venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya on the All-In podcast.
"The following week after what happened that Friday, we announced several deals with Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam," Latnik added.
The truth about America
In July 2025, the United States was in tariff discussions with the European Union, the United Kingdom, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and South Korea.
According to Howard Lutnick, countries that agreed to conclude negotiations with the US early were subject to lower tariffs. However, the sequence and relative rates of tariff agreements reached that month do not match Lutnick's claims.
Latnik also mentioned Vietnam in his remarks. Vietnam long ago concluded negotiations with the United States, but still pays the highest tariff rate on exports to the United States. Since July 2nd, Vietnam has been subject to a 20 percent tariff, the highest compared to any other country.
