News Topical, Digital Desk : A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court alleging that Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's personal appearance before the apex court in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) voter list case was constitutionally improper and legally wrong. On February 4, Banerjee became the first serving Chief Minister to argue in the Supreme Court.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice N.V. Anjania is scheduled to hear on Monday a batch of petitions related to the SIR in Bengal, including Banerjee's petition opposing the commission's exercise. The petition, filed by Satish Kumar Agrawal, former vice-president of the All India Hindu Mahasabha, has sought to intervene in Banerjee's plea.

It said that the subject matter of Banerjee's petition is not a personal or private dispute, but it relates to matters of state governance and the power of the Election Commission to conduct SIR as per the Constitution and election laws.

In such circumstances, Mamata Banerjee cannot claim to appear in her personal capacity and Bengal must be represented in this court through lawyers and appointed lawyers are already representing Bengal.
