News Topical, Digital Desk : Trump is facing criticism within his own country after imposing a 50 percent tariff on India. A resolution has been introduced in the US Congress against Trump's decision, calling for the 50 percent tariff on India to be lifted.

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Congresswoman Deborah Ross, and Congressman Mark Veasey jointly introduced this resolution in the lower house. The resolution calls for an end to the national emergency declared by President Donald Trump, which has imposed a 50 percent tariff on India. The US lawmakers have called this illegal and dangerous to the American economy.

What did the US lawmakers say ?

A similar proposal was introduced in the US Congress following the 50 percent tariffs imposed on Brazil. Trump invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose an emergency, increasing the existing 25 percent tariff on India to 50 percent. This decision took effect on August 27th.

Why was the demand raised ?

Raja Krishnamoorthi further said, "Instead of promoting American interests, Trump's decision is disrupting the supply chain. This is harming American workers and forcing consumers to buy goods at higher prices. If these tariffs are eliminated, the US can advance its dialogue with India on many issues, including economic and security."
