News Topical, Digital Desk : While approving the permanent commission for women military officers in the Indian Army, the Supreme Court had praised Colonel Sofia Qureshi in the year 2020. Qureshi is among the two female military officers who addressed the nation about 'Operation Sindoor'.

 

On February 17, 2020, the Supreme Court specifically acknowledged the achievements of Colonel Sofia Qureshi in its landmark judgment (Secretary, Ministry of Defence vs Babita Punia & Ors) granting permanent commission to women officers in the Indian Army.

 

Rejecting the central government's argument that women officers are unfit for permanent commission, the court highlighted the exemplary service of several women Short Service Commission officers. Qureshi's name came first among the twelve names.

 

Sofia is the first woman to lead 'Exercise Force 18' 

Lieutenant Colonel Sophia Qureshi (Army Signal Corps) is the first woman to lead an Indian Army contingent in a multinational military exercise called 'Exercise Force 18', the largest ever overseas military exercise hosted by India. She served in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo in 2006. Her job was to ensure peace in conflict-affected areas.

Colonel Sofia Qureshi of Gujarat origin, who became the face of Operation Sindoor of the Indian Army that destroyed terrorist bases in Pakistan, her father and grandfather have also been in the army. Her parents expressed pride in their daughter's bravery and said that she has done something for the country. In her childhood, Sofia used to listen to stories of the bravery of the army, today she has done bravery herself.

 

He said Pakistan is a dirty country and I don't like to even take its name. India has got a good Prime Minister and India will soon take back POJK. Sophia's father Tajuddin Qureshi says that one day during her studies Sophia said that there is no one from our family in the army so why don't I join it.

 

Sofia's sister Saina is a gold medalist in firing in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and due to her low weight she could not join the army, but Sofia was selected. Her father says, the Indian government gave a wonderful opportunity to our daughter, our aim has been fulfilled. Our daughter has done something for the country, now we have to bring back the enslaved Jammu and Kashmir. The country got a Prime Minister like Narendra Modi, where else can we find such a leader.

 

Pakistan is a dirty country: Sofia's father 

Taj says that our enemy is a dirty country and it is not right to even take its name. The action taken by India against it is worthy of that. Mother Alima says that whether it is a son or a daughter, both are equal, the daughter's valor has made our heads rise with pride. Father used to tell Sofia stories of the valor of the army, today Sofia herself did a great feat.

 

Sofia's son Sameer is preparing for recruitment in the Air Force, while niece Saira also wants to join the army. Colonel Sofia studied from class 1 to 3 in Naugaon of Chhatarpur district in Bundelkhand, Madhya Pradesh. Her cousin Bunty Suleman still lives in the same house where Sofia spent her childhood. Later, Colonel Sofia did her schooling in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Vadodara, after which she did her graduation in science from MS University and did her post graduation in biochemistry and took admission in PhD.

 

In 1999, when she got an opportunity, she left her PhD incomplete and joined the army through Short Service Commission. When she came to the academy, the Kargil war was going on. In 2006, she joined the United Nations Peacekeeping Force operation in Congo. In 2016, she also participated in the multinational military exercise. She was the only woman officer in the ASEAN military contingent.
