News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump has given Iran a stern 48-hour ultimatum to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Posting on Truth Social, Trump warned that if Tehran doesn't fully reopen the Strait within this deadline without any threat, the US will attack and destroy various Iranian power plants, starting with the largest ones.

Trump posted this at 5:14 a.m. Indian time, giving Iran until Tuesday morning. He wrote that if Iran does not fully open the Strait of Hormuz, without any threats, within 48 hours from this exact time, the United States will attack and destroy their various power plants, starting with the largest ones.

The threat marks a major escalation in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, a sharp contrast to Trump's vow to end the war just a day earlier.

Will target energy and desalination infrastructure: Iranian military

In response to Trump's ultimatum, the Iranian military command Khatam al-Anbiya has warned that if there is any attack on Iran's fuel and energy infrastructure, all energy, information technology and desalination infrastructure of the US and its allies in the region will be targeted.

One-fifth of global oil supplies affected

Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz to most shipping traffic, especially to countries complicit in attacks on Iran, following joint US-Israeli strikes on February 28. About a fifth of the world's crude oil and liquefied natural gas passes through the strait.

The embargo has forced oil-dependent countries to look for alternative routes and tap their reserves. This has sent crude oil prices soaring, raising the risk of global inflation if the war continues for a long time.

Many countries criticized

Several countries, including Britain, France, Italy, Germany, South Korea, Australia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, have strongly condemned the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian forces.

This development is further escalating tensions in the Middle East, where the ongoing conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran is severely impacting global energy markets. All eyes are on the situation to see whether Iran will comply with the ultimatum or whether a larger conflict will erupt.
