He first sang Mohammad Rafi's song 'Kya Hua Tera Wada' on stage with his father. At the age of 11, Sonu came to Mumbai with his father. He took training from classical singer Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. As a playback singer, Sonu sang his first song for the film 'Janam' (1990), which was never officially released. Sonu sang his first song for Doordarshan's serial Talaash (1992). After this, he entered Bollywood with the song 'O Aasman Wale Zameen' from the film 'Aaja Meri Jaan'.
