News Topical, Digital Desk : Getting British citizenship will no longer be easy. Now the waiting period for immigrants to get citizenship has been increased from five to 10 years. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday announced a strict new policy on immigration. The aim of this step is to ensure a significant reduction in immigration figures in the next five years.
This new policy will affect migrants from all over the world, including Indians. In a press conference before presenting the much-awaited white paper on migration in Parliament, Starmer accused the previous Conservative Party government of 'messing up' by using open borders. He said, the migration system will be tightened so that we have more control.
This system will change after the new policy
He said the new system would end the current system of automatic settlement and citizenship for anyone, including Indians, living in the UK for five years. Instead, all immigrants would have to spend a decade in the UK before applying for permanent residence unless they show a 'genuine and lasting contribution to the economy and society'. Applications of highly skilled individuals, such as nurses, doctors, engineers and AI leaders, who contribute to the UK economy, would be considered faster.
Starmer has promised to end Britain's failed experiment with open borders. The decision comes after the anti-immigration Reform Party's success in recent local elections. The long-standing dominant parties in British politics, Labour and the Conservatives, have seen their support fall in mayoral elections.
Starmer's party is facing growing discontent over immigration
Starmer, whose Labour Party won a landslide victory last July, faces growing discontent over immigration, which opponents say has put pressure on public services and fuelled racial tensions in parts of the country.
