News Topical, Digital Desk : Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has deleted a previous post in which he called Israel a curse on humanity. Published on Thursday, the post caused widespread uproar and raised questions about Pakistan's ability to mediate between the United States and Iran.
In that now-deleted post, Asif had written, " While peace talks are underway in Islamabad, a massacre is taking place in Lebanon. Innocent civilians are being killed by Israel. First Gaza, then Iran, and now Lebanon, the bloodshed continues unabated. I hope and pray that those who created this 'cancerous' regime on Palestinian soil to get rid of European Jews burn in hell. "
Netanyahu took aim
Netanyahu said Pakistan's defense minister's call for Israel's destruction was deeply offensive. "This is not a statement that can be tolerated from any government, especially not from one that claims to be an impartial broker of peace," his office posted on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also publicly rebuked Pakistan's leadership. Saar condemned what he called blatantly anti-Semitic and false accusations, warning that calling Israel a cancer is essentially calling for its destruction.
He said Israel would defend itself against terrorists who have vowed its destruction and stressed how seriously Tel Aviv takes the rhetoric coming from Islamabad.
The post was deleted after a sharp Israeli reaction.
Israel's reaction follows a series of events that began with Pakistan's Foreign Ministry strongly condemning Israeli military action in Lebanon. Following this, Khawaja Asif made inflammatory comments on social media. Following Israel's sharp reaction, Asif deleted his post.
