On the case of Nimisha Priya, an Indian national facing death sentence in a murder case in Yemen, the office of the Indian Grand Mufti, Kanthapuram AP Abu Backer Muslaiyar, said, "The death sentence of Nimisha Priya, which was earlier suspended, has been overturned. It has been decided to completely revoke the death sentence of Nimisha, which was earlier temporarily suspended."

The government has not confirmed

According to information provided by the office of the Indian Grand Mufti, Kanthapuram A.P. Abubakar Musliyar, Nimisha Priya's sentence has been officially revoked following a high-level meeting in Sana'a. However, the Union Ministry of External Affairs has not confirmed this development so far.

The decision was reportedly taken during mediation talks with a delegation of Yemeni scholars appointed by Sheikh Omar Hafiz Thangal, rulers of northern Yemen and international diplomatic representatives at the request of the Indian Grand Mufti.

Nurse Nimisha Priya, hailing from Palakkad district of Kerala, was convicted of killing her business partner in Yemen in 2017. Nimisha was sentenced to death in the year 2020. Nimisha's last appeal was rejected in 2023. Nimisha Priya was earlier scheduled to be hanged on July 16 but then it was postponed. However, now there is talk of canceling this sentence. Nimisha is currently lodged in a prison in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen.
