New Delhi: Amid the escalating row between Governor C V Ananda Bose and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Supreme Court has said that only regular vice-chancellors will be appointed in all the 36 state-aided universities in Bengal.
To end the tussle between the two top constitutional functionaries of the state over the appointment of vice-chancellors, the apex court had on July 8 constituted a selection committee headed by former Chief Justice UU Lalit to monitor the appointments.
In the order passed on July 29, the apex court clarified that there should be no interim arrangement regarding the appointment of vice-chancellors.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and KV Vishwanathan said, it is clarified that regular vice-chancellors will be appointed in all 36 state-aided universities. The court gave wide powers to the panel headed by Justice Lalit to prepare a list of eligible candidates for appointment to the post of vice-chancellor.
