New Delhi: India is preparing to build the first prototype of the 5.5th generation fighter aircraft by 2028 as part of its plan to develop the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

In a recent meeting between the Indian Air Force and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the project was discussed in detail and its roadmap was reviewed.

5.5th generation AMCA will be a stealth aircraft

Senior officials said that the 5.5th generation AMCA will be a stealth aircraft and will weigh around 27 tonnes. It will be capable of carrying weapons of very high weight. The agencies involved in its construction are engaged in developing such capabilities so that the aircraft is able to carry missiles in a completely stealthy manner.

The first prototype will be ready by 2028

Officials said that if the engine production and other related work is done on time, its first prototype will be ready by 2028. It will take at least six-seven years to develop and prepare the aircraft for future fighting.

DRDO will also select development and production partners for the aircraft project, which will include public sector undertakings and private sector companies.

Production likely to begin by 2035

Mass production of 5.5th generation fighter aircraft is likely to begin by 2035. It is noteworthy that the prototype of the 4.5th generation fighter aircraft is now expected to be ready in 2026, a delay of one year.
