New Delhi: India has issued a notice to Pakistan regarding the decades-old Indus Water Treaty. India has demanded a change in this agreement. India has clearly told Pakistan that it is necessary to review the Indus Water Treaty.

India sent notice

Government sources have given information about this to the news agency. Sources said that a notice was issued to Pakistan on the 30th of last month. The reasons given for the agreement include population change, environmental issues and the need to accelerate the development of clean energy to meet India's emission targets. India said that the circumstances have changed a lot since the agreement.

Terrorism is also a reason

India has also cited the ongoing cross-border terrorist activities as the reason behind the review. India said that terrorism is hindering the smooth functioning of the treaty.

What is the Indus Water Treaty?

The Indus Water Treaty was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960. It was signed in Karachi by then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and then President of Pakistan Ayub Khan under the mediation of the World Bank. Under the agreement, India got control of the three eastern rivers Ravi, Beas and Sutlej, while Pakistan got control of the three western rivers Indus, Chenab and Jhelum.
