News Topical, Digital Desk : The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the 129th Amendment Bill for One Nation One Election was held today (11 July) in Parliament House. Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar also participated in this meeting. They also put forth their views during the meeting.
Both the former CJIs stressed that the Election Commission of India should not be given unchecked powers in implementing the one nation, one election system.
Earlier, former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had also questioned the "sweeping powers" given to the election body in the proposed Constitution Amendment Act. DY Chandrachud and JS Khehar suggested to the parliamentary committee that there should be an "oversight mechanism" on the conduct of elections.
'Elected government needs to have a five-year term'
One of the judges also said that the five-year term of the elected government is important for good governance. It (five-year term) should not be reduced under any circumstances. The Constitution (One Hundred Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 are being examined by a Joint Committee of Parliament.
Let us tell you that two other former Chief Justices of the country, UU Lalit and Ranjan Gogoi, have also appeared before the committee. Although both of them did not question the constitutionality of simultaneous elections, they had raised questions on some aspects of the bill and given suggestions.
The joint committee of Parliament, headed by BJP MP PP Choudhary, is talking to jurists and legal experts to prepare its recommendations on the bill, which aims to hold simultaneous elections to state assemblies and Parliament.
If there is a need to amend the bill, we will do it: PP Chaudhary
On the suggestions of former Chief Justices, PP Choudhary said, "As far as the provision of Election Commission is concerned, if we feel that there is a need to amend the bill, we will amend it."
He further said, "We will send our report to Parliament only after making amendments in the national interest.
He also stressed that "one nation, one election system is essential for nation building. Chowdhary also said that "it is important that the constitutionality of the bill is maintained so that this system can continue for the next hundreds of years."
