News Topical, Digital Desk : Imagine your polling station is "Singapore," "For Pakistan," or "Slingshot," "Cockatoo," "Cashew Lizard," "Big Gut," or "Goat's Nest." These are no jokes, but the names of actual polling stations listed in the 2002 Telangana electoral rolls, available on the Election Commission's website.
These are now being used to map residents in the state, causing significant inconvenience to voters. The Times of India reported that dozens of absurd words and phrases were picked out from these lists, such as "for vegetarian," "a new student," "John compete," "find the pumpkin," "among the monkeys," and "while sleeping."
These names were from polling stations in former districts across Telangana. These names are also visible on the Election Commission's Voter Service Portal.
The Election Commission has put up a disclaimer
The Commission's portal carries a large disclaimer in red, stating that spellings of names may vary, so if you don't match the exact name, try variations. The Election Commission states that it has hosted data received from state Chief Electoral Officers without any changes.
Now, a Special Intensive Revision process is underway in Telangana, and voters are complaining that these ridiculous names are making it extremely difficult to find their own or family members' names on the SIR e-roll. These lists are being used for mapping, but the names are so strange that they are impossible to identify.
