New Delhi:  Four Bangladeshi nationals were arrested late Sunday night from Nandannagar Quarter Chowmuhani area located on the outskirts of Agartala. A police officer gave this information.

The arrest was made by police from the New Capital Complex (NCC) police station after receiving intelligence about suspicious activities in the area.

Inspector Sushanta Deb, officer in charge of the NCC police station, said the police had received credible information about the presence of four unidentified persons in the area.

The citizens were residents of Chapai Nawabganj district of Bangladesh

"During initial interrogation, the suspects claimed to be Indian citizens. However, after further interrogation, they admitted to being Bangladeshi citizens," the official said. The four arrested persons have been identified as Abdul Kalam, Kamrul Zaman, Nabir Husam and Mohammad Zubayr - all hailing from Bangladesh's Chapai Nawabganj district.

Citizens entered India without legal documents

The police have accused them of illegally entering Indian territory without valid passports or legal documents. The incident has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of border security measures along Tripura's 856-km-long border with Bangladesh.

The Border Security Force (BSF) claims to have stepped up surveillance and patrolling in the region, especially in the wake of recent tensions across the border in Bangladesh in the last two weeks. However, the arrest of these infiltrators has raised questions about the adequacy of these measures and the overall security along the border.
