
News Topical, Digital Desk : India's largest airline IndiGo has taken a big step on the occasion of Engineering Day. For the first time, the company has added a whole batch of 33 female technicians. This step not only strengthens IndiGo's diversity and equal opportunity policy, but also reflects the growing role of women in the Indian aviation sector.
IndiGo's engineering department plays a vital role in maintaining the safety, quality and reliability of over 400 aircraft. The company's technical dispatch reliability level is 99.89%. The new batch of women technicians recently completed a week-long induction program.
How many women are involved in Indigo?
It included inspiring sessions from senior leaders and stories from experienced women engineers to prepare the new team for the responsibility ahead. IndiGo's total workforce comprises 44.8% women and the company has one of the largest pools of pilots in the world.
Currently, the share of women pilots in IndiGo is 16.2%. On 15 August 2024, on the completion of 77 years of independence, IndiGo had inducted 77 women pilots in its airbase and ATR. Out of these, 72 pilots and 5 pilots were deployed in ATR.
Increased participation of women
The share of women in aviation technical roles is very low worldwide. In 2021, the number of women in aircraft maintenance was only 3%, which will decrease to 2.6% in 2024. According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the share of women was 4.5% in 2016, which increased to 5.1% in 2021.
