History of Ashura
The day of Ashura is a day to remember the values of courage, truth and resistance to oppression. On this day the martyrdom of Prophet Hazrat Imam Hussain is remembered. According to the beliefs of Islam, on the 10th day of Muharram, Imam Hussain sacrificed his life along with his family to protect Islam. Therefore, this day is celebrated as the day of Ashura.
Importance of Muharram
The month of Muharram holds special importance for both Shia and Sunni communities. In this month, especially on the day of Muharram, people of the Muslim community refrain from feasting, eating or eating food, etc., because Muharram is observed as a mourning. Also, getting married in this month or doing any work that involves noise is not considered right. Along with this, a procession of Tazia is taken out in memory of the martyrs on the tenth day of Muharram.
