News Topical, Digital Desk : To maintain the continued accuracy of the Aadhaar database, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has taken several proactive steps to receive death records from various sources and deactivate Aadhaar numbers after due verification, the Electronics and IT Ministry said on Wednesday.
Recently UIDAI had requested the Registrar General of India to share death records linked to Aadhaar numbers. The Registrar General has so far provided around 1.55 crore death records through Civil Registration System (CRS) from 24 States/Union Territories. Around 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers have been deactivated after proper verification.
A new service started on MyAadhaar portal
It is worth noting that UIDAI has launched a new service 'Information of Death of Family Member' on MyAadhaar portal on June 9, 2025 which is currently available in 24 states/union territories. Through this portal, any person can report the death of his deceased family member. For this, he has to authenticate himself and enter the Aadhaar number, death registration number and other details of the deceased person.
After the verification process is complete, the Aadhaar number of the deceased is deactivated. The work of connecting the remaining states/union territories to this portal is in progress. Apart from this, UIDAI is also exploring the possibilities of obtaining death related information from banks and other Aadhaar ecosystem institutions, so that the Aadhaar number of the deceased can be deactivated in time.
Demographic data is being sent to the states
According to the ministry, UIDAI is also taking the help of state governments in identifying deceased Aadhaar number holders. Under a pilot project, demographic data of Aadhaar holders above 100 years of age is being sent to the states to verify whether the Aadhaar holder is alive or not. On receipt of such verification report, necessary verification will be done before deactivating such Aadhaar number.
To prevent unauthorised use of Aadhaar number after the death of a family member, it is recommended that Aadhaar holders report the death of their family members on the MyAadhaar portal after obtaining the death certificate from the Death Registration Authority.
