News Topical, Digital Desk : Heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh have blocked 250 roads and the local weather department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rains in different parts of the state. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said a total of 181 roads in disaster-hit Mandi, 26 in Sirmaur and 23 in Kullu district were closed while 61 water supply schemes and 81 electricity transformers were affected till Friday morning.

'Orange' alert for 3 days of heavy rain 

The weather department has issued an 'orange' alert warning heavy to very heavy rains in isolated areas of Himachal Pradesh on July 21 and 23 and a 'yellow' alert warning heavy rains in some places of the state till Sunday. An orange alert has been issued for Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla and Sirmaur districts. People have been advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during this period.

The Meteorological Department uses four colours to issue weather alerts in the country. These colours and their messages are - Green (no action needed), Yellow (keep watching and monitoring), Orange (be prepared) and Red (action/assistance needed).

112 deaths so far, state suffers loss of Rs 1200 crore

Light to moderate rains lashed parts of the state on Thursday evening. Jogindernagar received 40 mm, Sarahan 38 mm, Jattan Barrage 28.6 mm, Kothi 28.4 mm, Shilaru 26.4 mm, Murari Devi 26 mm, and Narkanda and Jot 23 mm each. The SEOC said that since the onset of monsoon on June 20, till July 17, about 112 people have lost their lives, including 67 in rain-related incidents and 45 in road accidents. The SEOC said about 199 people have been injured while 35 are missing.

22 incidents of cloudburst and 19 incidents of landslides

The department said that Himachal Pradesh witnessed 31 flash floods, 22 cloudbursts and 19 landslides this monsoon and the state has suffered losses of over Rs 1,220 crore.
