Delhi MCD Property Tax: Delhi Municipal Corporation officials have termed the information spread through social media regarding the exemption in property tax as false. MCD has asked people not to pay attention to such information.
MCD said that on 25 February 2025, news came among the common people i.e. the people of Delhi that properties smaller than 100 square yards will get 100 percent discount and properties of 100 to 500 square yards will get 50 percent discount. The effect of this misinformation spread on social media was that people reduced paying property tax.
Actually, people got confused due to the news spread on social media. Many Delhiites asked MCD whether their property would get exemption or not. MCD published clarification on this issue in newspapers, but the message did not reach the public properly. People started hesitating to pay property tax, which directly affected the pocket of MCD. Fewer taxpayers came and total tax collection also decreased.
What is the whole matter?
MCD said that in the financial year 2024-25, Rs 2132.89 crore was collected from property tax, which is slightly less than last year's Rs 2163.57 crore. The real shock came after the news of discounts. After February 25, only Rs 193.28 crore tax was collected, whereas last year at this time Rs 367.16 crore was collected. That is, almost half less tax was collected.
On the contrary, till February 24, tax collection was going great. By that time, Rs 1932.51 crore had been collected which was Rs 158.7 crore more than last year. This was an increase of 8.95 percent, but the rumours of exemption spoiled the whole game.
Why is property tax necessary?
MCD says that property tax is about one-fourth of their income. If this money does not come, there will be difficulty in providing basic facilities like cleanliness, maintenance of roads, street lights and drainage of rain water. MCD has appealed to the people of Delhi to pay the tax on time. So that the services of the city remain smooth.
