Ashwatthama  , son of Guru Dronacharya, was also a character in the Mahabharata.  To avenge his father's death,  Ashwatthama committed a crime for which he continues to suffer today. The Pandavas played this trick

Ashwatthama's father, Dronacharya, was also a powerful warrior, making it extremely difficult to win the battle. Lord Krishna then devised a plan. During the battle, Bhima killed an elephant named Ashwatthama and shouted loudly that Ashwatthama was dead. To confirm this, Dronacharya asked Yudhishthira if this was true.

Yudhishthira then announces that Ashwatthama has been killed. Dronacharya, thinking that his son Ashwatthama has been killed, sits down in grief and begins to mourn. Seizing this opportunity, Dhristadyumna beheads Guru Drona with his sword.

When Ashwatthama learned of this, he became furious and vowed revenge against the Pandavas. He killed their five sons while they were sleeping. He also used the Brahmastra to kill Uttara's unborn child (Parikshit) to end the Pandava lineage, but Lord Krishna protected Uttara's womb.

This curse was received

Lord Krishna punished Ashwatthama for this heinous crime by removing the divine gem from his forehead. He also cursed him to wander the earth alone for 3,000 years, with a wound on his forehead that would never heal. This immortality was a curse for Ashwatthama, causing him immense suffering and pain. It is said that Ashwatthama has been wandering for ages because of this curse.
