However, it is not yet known what type of testing President Donald Trump has ordered. Vice President JD Vance stated that testing American nuclear weapons would ensure they are actually functioning properly.
When asked about Trump's social media post ordering a nuclear test, Vance told reporters at the White House, “It's an essential part of American national security to make sure that the nuclear weapons we have actually function properly, and this testing is part of the system.”
Donald Trump gave this order
Trump on Thursday ordered the US military to immediately resume nuclear weapons testing after a 33-year hiatus. The announcement came minutes before he was to begin a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying it would be on "equal ground" with Russia and China.
Trump's order is a strategic response by the United States to ensure it remains outmatched by the growing nuclear capabilities of Russia and China. This decision comes at a time when Russia recently stunned the world by successfully testing two highly dangerous nuclear weapons.
"Due to the testing programs of other countries, I have directed the Department of War to begin testing our nuclear weapons on a similar basis. This process will begin immediately," Trump said in a post on TruthSocial, adding, "I would like to see nuclear disarmament because we have too many, and Russia is second, and China is third. China will catch up in four or five years."
Russia gave this answer
Meanwhile, a senior Russian lawmaker said Trump's decision would usher in a new era of uncertainty and open warfare. Meanwhile, China's Foreign Ministry called on the US to abide by its promise to ban nuclear testing and maintain global strategic balance and stability.
