Why is Muharram celebrated?
Muharram is celebrated primarily by the Shia community of Islam to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. It is particularly significant on the tenth day (Ashura) of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar.
Imam Hussain and his 72 companions were martyred by Yazid's army in Karbala (modern Iraq) in 680 AD. This event is a symbol of sacrifice, struggle against injustice and protection of truth for Shia Muslims.
During Muharram, Shia Muslims observe matam (mourning), with processions, majlis (religious gatherings), and taziya processions. Some people fast and give charity. Sunni Muslims also honor Muharram, but for them it is not an occasion of intense mourning. In addition, some Muslims also fast on the tenth day of Muharram (Ashura) to commemorate the salvation of Prophet Moses from Pharaoh.
