News Topical, Digital Desk : Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Thursday that major opposition parties have given their in-principle approval to support the motion to remove Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Verma and the process of collecting signatures of MPs may begin soon. He said the government is yet to decide whether the motion will be introduced in the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha.

For Lok Sabha, signatures of at least 100 MPs are required. For Rajya Sabha, support of at least 50 MPs is required. He said the signatures will be collected after the government decides in which House the proposal will be brought.

The monsoon session will begin on July 21 and end on August 21. According to the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, when a motion for the removal of a judge is adopted in either House, the Speaker or the Chairman will constitute a three-member committee.

This committee will examine the grounds on which the removal (or, in other words, impeachment) of the judge is sought. The committee consists of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) or a judge of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice of one of the 25 High Courts and an "eminent jurist".

Rijiju said that since the matter is related to corruption in the judiciary, the government wants all political parties to get involved in it. When asked about the committee report which proved that cash was found at Justice Verma's official residence, he said that the report of the three-judge committee did not indict Justice Verma and its purpose was to recommend future action as Parliament can only remove a judge.
