News Topical, Digital Desk : Japanese Prime Minister Sanao Takaichi on Friday, January 23, dissolved the lower house of Parliament, paving the way for elections scheduled for February 8, 2026.

Takaichi's move is an attempt to leverage his popularity to help reinvigorate the ruling party. However, it will delay a vote on the budget, which aims to boost the struggling economy and address rising prices.

House dissolved for election campaigning

Takaichi, elected as Japan's first female leader in October, has enjoyed a strong approval rating of nearly 70 percent in just three months. Takaichi has also seen growing hostility toward China, following comments she has made in favor of Taiwan.

US President Donald Trump wants to spend more on weapons as Washington and Beijing race for military superiority in the region. The dissolution of the 465-member lower house paves the way for election campaigning, which officially begins on Tuesday.
